Gray Summit Missouri was founded by a gentleman from New York, Daniel Gray. Mr. Gray built a hotel here in 1845 and today the population of Gray Summit is around 2,700. This town is located in Franklin County, Missouri less than an hour east of St. Louis on Interstate 44. It was built on the summit between Kansas City and St. Louis. The Missouri Pacific Railroads continues to run its’ trains through a tunnel underneath this community.
There are a number of family friendly places to visit here in Gray Summit. Purina Farms is located here and has an impressive 84,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility. Visitors who come out to Purina have opportunities to attend one of the renowned dog shows, agility competitions or visit the petting zoo and learn about the care and keeping of animals. This place is full of activities and pet lovers will not leave disappointed about their experience here. The Shaw Nature Reserve is another fun place for animal lovers in Gray. It is located off of Highway 100 and Interstate 44 and is open seven days a weeks. The reserve is a gorgeous 2,441 acres full of diverse geology, plant and animal life. The Reserve is known for its educational opportunities and was designated a National Environment Landmark in 1972.
Gray Summit’s continental climate creates a variety of weather conditions in this small town. After a long hike at the Shaw Nature Reserve, residents enjoy getting back to the refreshing conditions in their homes with a high efficiency air conditioner. They spend about a month and a half of their summer with temperatures above 90 when humidity can also climb above 90 making reliable air conditioning and air filtration units a real necessity here in Gray.
